Dear Friends of CVAP,
This letter comes to you with great sadness and sorrow, as my dear and beloved
friend and mentor, Dr. Ivar Lovaas passed away August 2nd. Ivar was surrounded
by his family and held by his precious wife, Nina, as he passed from this earth.
Ivar spent most of his astounding career
developing and researching the most effective
way to treat children with autism. His
ground-breaking program set forth an effective
treatment model that functioned to significantly
change the lives of thousands of children
across the globe. As world-renowned and
famous as Ivar became, he by character was
humble and maintained his focus only on what
he felt mattered most...the children and their
families. He avoided the spotlight, cameras,
and any activities that would create monetary
gain for himself. Ivar’s energy was 100%
directed toward the children.
I was extremely blessed to have spent much
time with Ivar and Nina over the past 20 years,
both professionally and socially. Ivar was
a delight to be with, he was brilliant and
thoughtful and had a contagious laugh with a smile as wide as the sun. A room would
light up when he entered. Ivar would become serious when he spoke of his childhood
in Norway during the war, his early career years, and when he discussed his dreams
of discovering a way to tap into the intellect of those children that we tried but
couldn't reach. Ivar’s contribution to the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and the
treatment of children with autism sets him apart from others who have also worked
hard in the field. Ivar fulfilled his commitment to research substantiating the
effectiveness of the model he developed. Through his own empirical research and the
replication of his research by others, effective treatment of autism now has a body of
literature proving that indeed his treatment model changes and enhances the lives of
children.
CVAP is a replication site of the work that Ivar started back in the 1960s. Only
because of his committed effort toward the development of his program and the years
of research, does CVAP exist. This year CVAP celebrates its 20th year of delivering
that which Ivar started. The children we have served and continue to serve, the lives
that we have changed, and the families that have been fulfilled by our
treatment…started with Ivar.
Ivar will be greatly missed, an icon in the world of autism, and a true and dear
friend…we at CVAP commit to do our very best to carry on Ivar’s mission, one child at
a time.
Fondly,
Mila Amerine Dickens
